HIV and AIDS

News, November 2011

Worldwide, over 33 million people are living with HIV and AIDS and each day thousands of them die from the effects.  Almost half of the 7,400 people infected with HIV daily are under the age of 25; this equals 2 teenager per minute.

Palliative care plays a vital role in the ongoing care of children and young people living with HIV and AIDS.  While the availability of ARVs for children and young people has increased worldwide, there are thousands that still do not have access to these drugs.  Many on HAART still suffer from both acute and persistent pain and experience complications as a result of the virus. Even more  have needs outside of the purely physical manifestations of the disease, such as a need for bereavement counselling, counselling around HIV disclosure, dealing with bias and stigmatism, social support and assistance with compliance and adherence.

We would like to encourage our members to share any news and resources they may have with us by writing to the Information Officer at info@icpcn.co.za who will be happy to add relevant links, documents and information to this page of the website.
