CHI 20th World Congress

CHILDREN'S HOSPICE INTERNATIONAL'S
20th WORLD CONGRESS

14 - 16 SEPTEMBER 2009

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

First held in 1983, the CHI World Congress is Children's Hospice International's most significant educational effort and aims to educate those who care for children with life-threatening conditions and their families about the latest trends in the field and provides real-world examples of innovative approaches to peadiatric curative, palliative and hospice care.

This year, in partnership with the ICPCN, the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA) and with technical assistance from The Tutu Institute for Prayer and Pilgrimage, CHI will be holding its 20th World Congress from 14 - 16 September in Cape Town, South Africa.  The theme of this congress is "Nurturing the Spirit" but the congress intends to fully explore all aspects of children's palliative care from the latest innovations in clinical care and new research to theories and experiences with such issues as "Pain of the soul" and "Caring for the Caregivers".

EARLY REGISTRATION HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 31 JULY 2009

Once you have downloaded the Registration Form from this site, please SAVE it onto your computer before completing and submitting.  If you do not receive confirmation of receipt within 24 hours, please contact annanda@hpca.co.za

KEY NOTE SPEAKERS
SISTER FRANCES DOMINICA

A Key Note speaker for the event will be Sister Frances Dominica.  Sister Frances founded the very first children's hospice, Helen House, back in November 1982.  She is also the founder of Douglas House, the first hospice to open for young adults.

The opening of Helen House set in motion a movement that has  spread and taken root in a growing number of countries around the world, including South Africa where there are now more than 40 sites providing palliative care to children.  Congress delegates will be taken on a tour of one or two children's hospices situated nearby on the afternoon of Wednesday 16 September.

THE REV. DR. JOAN BROWN CAMPBELL

The Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell is an ordained minister with standing in two denominations: the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the American Baptist Church.

She was the first woman to be Associate Executive Director of the Greater Cleveland Council of Churches; the first woman to be Executive Director of the U.S. office of the World Council of Churches; the first ordained woman to be General Secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; and the only woman in the clergy procession of over 200 for the enthronement of Desmond Tutu as Archbishop of South Africa. Tutu referred to her as "a woman of courage and compassion" and noted "her voice helped to bring an end to the evil of apartheid." Today, she is the first woman Director of Religion at the historic Chautauqua Institution, a center for religion, the arts, education and recreation.

As General Secretary of the National Council of Churches and as Executive Director of the U.S. office of the World Council of Churches, Rev. Campbell participated in some of the great historic events of the last century. She led a delegation to present the Catholic edition of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible to Pope John Paul II. She organized volunteers to work for the election of Carl B. Stokes as the first black mayor of a major American city. She worked with Martin Luther King and brought him to her own congregation, the first white church in Cleveland to receive Dr. King. Dr. Campbell served as an honorary election monitor with President Kaunda of Zambia in the election of Nelson Mandela as the first African president of South Africa, and she negotiated with Fidel Castro and President Clinton for the return of Elian Gonzales to his father in Cuba. Together with Paul Gorman, Carl Sagan, Dean James Morton, and Albert Gore she was a founder of what is today the National Religious Partnership on the Environment. In addition, she was the co-director with Rev. Jesse Jackson of the mission to Belgrade where, with the help of the Serbian Orthodox church, they successfully negotiated the release of American soldiers held captive. She led peace missions to the Middle East including meetings with the major leaders in the region.

She holds numerous national and local offices, most recently Dr. Campbell has become one of the founding members of the Council of Sages for Karen Armstrong's Charter of Compassion Initiative through TED.

"If we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, we must expand this idea to understand that our neighbor lives next door to us around the world. "

Joan Brown Campbell, Making the "Beloved Community" Real, Sacred Circles, Washington National Cathedral

THEME

Motivated by the beauty of its location, the theme “Nurturing the Spirit” which will run as a thread throughout the talks and presentations, is especially fitting. Through three broad tracks focusing on Care, Policy and Development, the congress will look at ways to nurture the spirit of compassion, and the quest for knowledge and understanding. It will do this by sharing insights and innovations to overcome challenges faced in providing quality palliative care to children around the globe, including those in Africa infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.   It also aims to spotlight the importance of providing adequate care and nurturing for the caregivers themselves as more than most, those who work in this field tend to give a great deal extra than just their time and their skills.

One of Cape Town's biggest tourist attractions, the Waterfront evokes images of the early activities of the harbour. Much of its charm lies in the fact that this busy commercial harbour is set in the midst of a huge entertainment venue with pubs, restaurants, specialty shops, craft markets, theatres and movies.

  • Cape Point

Situated at the junction of two of earth's most contrasting water masses - the cold Benguela current on the West Coast and the warm Agulhas current on the East Coast , the Cape of Good Hope is popularly perceived as the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. Geographically, however, the Indian Ocean joins the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Agulhas.

Fish Hoek is only 30 minutes outside the city of Cape Town and is a charming little seaside village in False Bay with loads of tourist attractions within a 20-30 mile radius.

  • Penguins at Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach is on the False Bay coast where the water is a little warmer and you will find an interesting wildlife relationship in action:  here it's the penguins who rule and the people who make way.
